While there are many options when it comes to lawn maintenance equipment, one of the most popular choices is the standard walk-behind lawnmower such as the 4.5 HP made by Murray, Inc. To insure the lawnmower operates at peak efficiency, it is a good idea to occasionally clean the air filter.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Flat head screwdriver
  • Warm running water
  • Mild liquid detergent
  • Paper towels
  1. Step 1

Insure the engine of the 4.5 HP Murray lawnmower is turned off and the mower blade is not turning. Locate the air cleaner on the right-hand side of the engine as you are facing the lawnmower.

  2. Step 2

Remove the air cleaner retaining screw by turning it counterclockwise with the flat head screwdriver. Grasp the air cleaner retaining screw and pull it straight up and out. Set the screw aside.

  3. Step 3

Remove the air cleaner from the engine by pulling it straight up. Separate the upper casing from the lower casing by pulling the two halves apart. Remove the foam air filter from the air cleaner casing.

  4. Step 4

Wash the casing halves and the foam air filter with a mild detergent under warm running water. Squeeze excess water from the foam air filter. Dry the casing halves with the paper towel. Allow the foam air filter to completely air dry.

  5. Step 5

Place the foam air filter into the bottom half of the air cleaner casing. Press the top half of the air cleaner casing into place. Replace the air cleaner on the engine. Insert the air cleaner retaining screw into the air cleaner. Tighten the screw until it is secure.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you notice any vibration after cleaning the air filter, immediately stop the engine to check for the cause. Vibration could indicate a loose blade or loose engine mounting bolts.
  • Never work on any lawnmower while it is running.
  • Exhaust pipes and mufflers may grow extremely hot after short periods of operation. To prevent painful burns, use caution when working on a mower that has recently been operated.
