Instructions

    • 1

Decide on a pattern, if any, for your square coaster--maybe a darker border of blue or black beads with lighter colors going in toward the center or maybe just a kaleidoscope of colors throughout the pattern. Solid colors are great as well as stripes of colors.

    • 2

Cut off a piece of nonflavored waxed dental floss about 18 inches long. Tie the first bead on with a fisherman's knot. This is a simple knot made by passing the string through the bead and making one tie. Then twist the string around itself about five times and loop back through the first tie. Pull snug.

    • 3

String on the first row of beads, taking into account that the length will be a little longer than the first string of beads. Use an even number of beads.

    • 4

Come back around the last bead and string the first bead of the next row right next to the last one. String the end of the dental floss through the second bead of the first row, then through another new bead, through the forth bead of the first row and so on, until you get to the end of the second row. Everything will be quite floppy, but that's okay because it will tighten up later. Repeat again for the third row, adding a new bead every other position. You will actually be adding only half the number of beads at each turn.

    • 5

Weave as many beads as you like to make it as square as possible--generally as many rows as there are beads in the first row. When you get to the last bead, make another fisherman's knot and cut off the extra dental floss.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can use jeweler's wire in place of dental floss.
