Begin to remove the ceramic tile. Start by working in a small section near a doorway or opening. Score the grout line with a grout saw. Chisel enough grout to proceed to pry up the tile.

    • 3

Use a putty knife with a stiff handle that is three inches long. Tap the putty knife with a hammer. Some tiles will loosen and are easy to remove, but some will continue to adhere.

    • 4

Wear safety glasses and gloves as you place a bath towel over two or three tiles and hit with a hammer to crack the tile. Use the putty knife to continue easing the broken pieces. Tap with the hammer if necessary.

    • 5

Work on a small section at a time. Clean up the broken pieces as you work. Tiles that are stubborn will need more effort to remove. Continue to hammer a pry bar. Carefully remove each tile until you are ready to move on to the next section.

Clear away all the broken pieces. Vacuum the entire surface. Remove any remaining tile or grout. Prepare to cover the floor with your choice of floor covering.
