How to Divide a Peace Lily
Not only is a peace lily an attractive plant with unusual white blooms that sit atop a single stalk, it cleans the air, too. This wonderful little plant received the honor of Desk Plant of the Year in 2007 for its amazing ability to purify the air and its ability to grow in low light conditions commonly found in offices. You will find peace lilies happily cohabitating with beta fish as they grow atop a vase with the beta contently swimming amid the roots. When the peace lily outgrows the vase, division of the plant is quick and easy. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Divide the root system into two or more sections and cut through the roots with a sharp knife. For those grown in vases, simply pull the sections apart, being careful not to damage roots. Create additional vases of peace lilies or follow the directions for planting the peace lily in soil.
-
2
Fill a plant pot 3/4 full of potting soil that has a handful of vermiculite added to it. This will help with drainage and assist in better air circulation.
-
-
3
Spread the roots of the peace lily out over the potting soil being careful not to damage roots. Cover the roots and stem to the original soil level.
-
4
Water thoroughly until water runs from the drainage holes in the bottom of the pot. Do not let peace lilies set in standing water for more than a few hours.
-
5
Place the newly potted peace lily in a location where it will receive filtered light. It will grow under office conditions with florescent lights, but may not bloom. If the plant produces greenish blooms, it is a sign that it is receiving too little light. A move to location that receives more light will produce white blooms.
-
6
Allow the soil to dry out between waterings. When the top 3 or 4 inches are dry to the touch it is time to water your peace lily. Water thoroughly until water runs out of the drainage holes each time you water your peace lily.
-
7
Observe the leaves of the peace lily to determine when watering is needed. When the leaves begin to droop, it is time to water. The lily will revive within hours of being watered.
