When putting together a themed gift, presentation is important. By packaging your gift in a decoupaged box, you will be giving two gifts for the price of one. Decoupaged boxes are great to use for trinkets and keepsakes, especially if the theme is reminiscent of a special occasion such as a wedding or birth. Decoupaged boxes do not have to be given away; you can use them for yourself for organizational purposes. In this article, you will learn the skill of decoupaging a box.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Paper mache box
  • Wrapping paper or scrapbook paper
  • Sponge brush
  • Scissors
  • Decoupage glue
  1. Step 1

Prepare paper. If you are working with a round or square box, simply turn box on to the side to measure the proper dimensions. If the box has a more geometric pattern, like a star, measure the paper and cut to fit.

  2. Step 2

Apply glue. With a sponge brush, apply the decoupage glue directly onto the paper mache box.

  3. Step 3

Adhere paper. Adhere the paper onto the box, making sure that seams are matching.

  4. Step 4

Smooth. With a rounded flat edge, carefully smooth out any wrinkles or uneven edges. If needed, add embellishments to cover any "mistakes."

  5. Step 5

Apply top coat. Once paper is correctly fitted to the box, apply a top coat of decoupage glue in order to finish the project. The top coat will protect the paper from tearing.

Tips & Warnings
  • A rounded flat edge can be purchased in a crafts department.
  • Apply a thin layer of both bottom and top coats of decoupage glue. If the coat is too thick, the paper will slide and possibly tear.
