How to Tie Chair Shashes Using Tight Knot

Chair sashes are a beautiful way to dress up plain chairs for your wedding or reception. Even folding chairs can look elegant draped in a cloth cover and tied in place with a sash. Sashes can be purchased or rented. They can even be created using a fabric-like organza purchased in bulk from a fabric store. Many stores even sell bride/groom chair sashes or personalized sashes. Of course, you could also personalize them yourself.

Instructions

  1. How to Tie Chair Shashes Using Tight Knot

    • 1

Put on a chair cover, if you're using one.

    • 2

Stand facing the back of the chair.

    • 3

Place your hands on either side of the center of the sash.

    • 4

Align the center of the sash with the middle of the chair back. You will have to reach over the back of the chair, sort of like wrapping a towel around a child's shoulders.

    • 5

Slide your hands out toward the ends of the sash as you pull it toward you and around the chair back. You want it to be snug, but pulling it too tight could make it slip upward.

    • 6

When your hands come together behind the chair back, tie the sash in one knot as though you were begining to tie your shoes.

    • 7

Tighten the knot by pulling toward the ceiling with one hand and toward the floor with the other until it's snug. The sash should be evenly horizontal all the way around the chair back.

    • 8

Tie one more knot. This time tighten the knot carefully by pulling each hand out to the sides.

Tips & Warnings

  • Tie the first knot a bit loose, then walk around the chair and adjust the sash as needed. If one area is too bunched, smooth it out. It's easiest to make adjustments before the final knot is tight and tied.

  • Reversing the direction that you tighten each knot will produce an different, beautiful effect.
