How to Make a Display Shelf Using a Window

Create this trash-to-treasure display shelf from a window to show off a special collection of memories. Give a window destined for the trash a new life as the front frame of a cute wall shelf. The size of the window will determine the size of the shelf and the width of the window pane frames will determine the dimension of each shelf.   • Old window with multiple panes
  • 1x6 pine board
  • 1/4" plywood
  • Wood glue
  • Craft glue
  • 1" wood screws
  • Wallpaper
  • Paint

  • Drill and bits

Instructions

      Measure the sides of the window. Cut two 1 by 6 pieces using the side measurements.

      Measure the width of the window. Cut two 1 by 6 pieces using the width measurement minus 1 1/2 inches.

      Construct a box frame with the width pieces on the top and bottom, inside the ends of the side pieces. Drill pilot holes and attach the pieces together using wood screws.

      Cut more 1 by 6 pieces using the width measurement for the additional shelves on the inside of the display shelf. For each row of window pane frames, attach a shelf.

      Measure the back dimensions of the newly constructed box and cut the 1/4 inch plywood to size. Paint the back and edges of the plywood.

      Cut a piece of wallpaper using the dimensions of the plywood. Glue the wallpaper to the unpainted side of the plywood.

      Cut a piece of wallpaper using the dimensions of the plywood. Glue the wallpaper to the unpainted side of the plywood.

      Apply wood glue around the back edges of the display shelf. Top with the plywood and attach using the brad nails.

      Remove the window glass from the window frame.

      Apply glue to the front edges of the display shelf. Top with the window frame and attach using the brad nails.

      Paint the window frame. Allow to dry.

      Turn the shelf face down and attach the desired hanging hardware.

Tips & Warnings

  • For a more rustic and worn look, sand the painted surface and edges of the window display shelf.

  • For an enclosed cupboard: attach the window frame to the constructed box using hinges to create a door. Do not take the glass out of the window.

  • Match the wallpaper to the decor of the room or experiment with fabrics, such as wrapping paper or sheet music. Use full pieces or tear and rip for a collage effect and decoupage using thinned craft glue.
