Egg carton bats can be an inexpensive way to help decorate for Halloween. These little critters can make a perfect addition to your holiday decor, and are a useful way to help recycle those old empty egg cartons. With some common craft materials and a few minutes of your time, you can have a dozen of these cute crafts ready to fly around your home.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • An empty egg carton
  • Scissors
  • String or yarn
  • Black paint
  • A paintbrush
  • Wiggly craft eyes
  • Old newspapers or plastic
  • Markers
  1. Step 1

Cut your egg carton into three-cup sections. Cut each one in a row so they are still hooked together in a line.

  2. Step 2

Use scissors to cut the shape of bat wings out of the two-egg carton cups on the ends of each three-cup section. You should now have an uncut head cup in the middle, and one cut bat wing-shaped egg carton cup on each end.

  3. Step 3

Lay some old newspapers or plastic down on your work surface to keep from getting paint on it.

  4. Step 4

Paint each egg carton bat black with a paintbrush. You may want to paint the inside of the egg carton cups, too, as people may see them when the bat is hanging up.

  5. Step 5

Glue some wiggly craft eyes on the front of the bat's face.

  6. Step 6

Use markers to draw a mouth or other designs on your egg carton bat. You can use glow-in-the-dark paint to make your designs, and your bat will glow at night.

  7. Step 7

Poke a hole through the top of the bat's head with scissors.

  8. Step 8

Tie a knot in one end of a piece of string or yarn, and thread the other end of the string or yarn through the hole in the bat's head. You can use this string to hang your bat up for decorating. Visit the resource below for more information on other Halloween crafts.

Tips & Warnings
  • Draw an outline of the bat's wings on the egg carton cups before cutting them out.
  • Supervise children when they are using scissors to avoid injury.
