We all love our animals, but vet bills can get expensive. No one should have to choose between giving up a pet's health or going broke. There are many ways that veterinary offices try to make paying easier, but they do not necessarily make the bills any cheaper. Some offices offer lines of credit that will spread payments out over time. There are also savings accounts available for pet care bills. While these are great ideas, there are better ways to save some money on vet bills. Here are some steps to help cut costs on your next veterinary visit.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Take care of your pets. This includes grooming them regularly, trimming their nails, brushing their teeth, feeding them healthy foods and ensuring they get lots of exercise.

  2. Step 2

Have your pets spayed or neutered while they are young . Usually, the earlier this procedure is done, the less expensive it will be. It could possibly eliminate some future health issues as well.

  3. Step 3

Schedule yearly exams and shots. These visits are similar to regular visits your child has while growing up. If your animals are taken to the vet often, it is more likely that potential problems will be caught before they get out of hand. This will save you money in the long run.

  4. Step 4

Call around for savings specials. Some veterinary offices offer discounts and reduced prices for new patients, rescued animals or really young or old animals. They also tend to have free samples of prescribed medicines for your pets.

  5. Step 5

Get pet insurance. With pet insurance, you will pay a monthly premium, but you will only have to pay a percentage of each vet bill.

Tips & Warnings
  • As with humans, preventive care is essential in keeping the cost of animal care lower, but sometimes things may happen that you cannot control.
