  1. How to Clean Tinted Car Windows

    • 1

Brush off any loose dirt with a soft, dry cloth. Doing this helps prevent larger pieces of dirt from scratching the window tint when you wash with soapy water. Do this on the inside and outside of the car’s windows, one window at a time. If the glass is very dirty, change to a clean cloth before moving on to the next window.

    • 2

Dampen a cloth or soft sponge with water only and gently wipe it over the window, removing any remaining loose dirt. Use a clean damp cloth or sponge for each window.

    • 3

Put very mild soap on a clean wet sponge and gently wipe over the window. Soap only one tinted window at a time so that the soap does not have time to dry on the glass.

    • 4

Aim a garden hose or watering can nozzle towards the top of the window. Allow a gentle stream of water to wash the soap downward, rinsing the window thoroughly.

    • 5

Dry the window thoroughly with a soft clean towel. Start at the top of the window and gently move the towel downward--this will help prevent streaking and water spots. Make sure the window is completely dry before moving on to the next window.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you use a commercial car window cleaner, read the bottle to make sure it is safe for tinted windows

  • Place super-absorbent paper towels along the window base to keep too much water or debris from getting down into the window frame.

  • Use warmer (but not hot) water for very dirty windows

  • In winter, you may need to clean and dry the windows quickly so the water does not freeze on the window—in this case, skip the second step and go directly to cleaning with soap

  • Don't use harsh chemical products, such as ammonia, on tinted windows. Harsh chemicals eat away at the tint

  • Never use abrasive cleaning cloths or abrasive material sponges on tinted windows. These can leave small scratches that will shorten the life of the tint. Even rough paper towels can harm the tint over time.
