How to Do the Bandy Twist in Tap Dancing

The bandy twist is a dance movement that was popular in the days of the Buck and Wing dancing, which was a precursor to modern-day tap dancing. Jim Bandy, a vaudeville performer, invented the step. The bandy twist is a relatively easy step to learn. It involves turning on the ball-change step.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Tap shoes
  1. Step 1

    Step down to the front on your right foot on the count of “a.”

  2. Step 2

    Shuffle your left foot on the “and 2” count.

  3. Step 3

    Execute a ball change (stepping down on your left foot in back of your right foot and then stepping forward on your right foot) to the count of “and 3.”

  4. Step 4

    Pivot on your right foot, doing a half right inside turn on the “and” count.

  5. Step 5

    Step down and forward on your left foot on the count of “4.”

  6. Step 6

    Repeat the entire step, ending up facing front.

Tips & Warnings
  • Take your time. Get the count down and put it together with the steps. Play some music. Dance in front of a mirror if possible. Use your arms for both balance and presentation.
  • Slippery floors should be avoided.
