Pirates can be a great theme for a kid's birthday, an anniversary get-together or even a big 50th-birthday bash. One fun thing you can do to set the tone and theme of the party is to make treasure-map invitations to send out. People will instantly be thrilled with the unique design and know that your party is one not to be missed. These invitations are easy and fun to make, and will leave a lasting impression on your guests.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Purchase some parchment paper. In the center of the paper, draw a rough sketch of a map to the party's location. Have "X" mark the spot. Draw this with an ink pen, so it looks more like an old treasure map. Include a compass in one corner. At the top of the page, write a fun and playful riddle that reads like a set of treasure clues but informs guests of the party's purpose and when it will take place. At the bottom of the page, write "If you wish to find the treasure, call (phone number) before (RSVP date)." You can do this on your computer and print it on the parchment paper, but it looks better when done in black ink.

  2. Step 2

Fill a large, shallow container with cold or room-temperature tea. Place the invitations in the container, one at a time. Push the paper down so it is completely covered in tea. Let the paper soak in the tea for at least 2 minutes. Carefully remove from the tea and gently shake off the excess tea.

  3. Step 3

Place the tea-coated parchment paper on a baking sheet. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. When the oven is ready, put in the baking sheet. Let the paper cook for 3 minutes. Remove from the oven and flip the paper over. Bake for another 3 minutes. The paper should be dry, tanned and crunched.

  4. Step 4

Take a lighter and light one edge of the paper on fire. Let it burn for only a second or two, then blow it out. Repeat on several sections of the paper, so you have burned edges that are browned and crispy, like an old map that was just found in an attic somewhere.

  5. Step 5

Let the paper sit out and dry for several minutes. Then begin to curl it at one end. Continue to roll the paper all the way until it forms a scroll. Cut a piece of twine and wrap it around the scroll. Tie the twine into a bow. Now go deliver your scrolls and get ready for the party!

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep the writing clear, even though it's handwritten.
  • Don't burn the edges too much, or they will break off and the invitation information will be lost.
