Instructions

  1. Prepare the Banana

    • 1

Select the banana. It should be fairly ripe, although not so soft that it will fall apart when you attempt the trick. It should also be rather dull in color and flecked throughout with brown so that the marks you will be making on it will not be obvious.

    • 2

Thread a 3-inch-long needle with a yard of tan or light brown polyester thread. Start near the top of the banana, poke the needle into one of the ridges along the side of the banana so that it goes all the way through and comes out on the next ridge. Continue until you have pierced each of the five ridges. Then go back to the hole where you started and repeat the process proceeding in the opposite direction.

    • 3

Pull sharply on the thread until it comes free from the banana. As it comes out, the banana will “slice" itself.

    • 4

Repeat Steps 2 and 3 at several spots near the top of the banana; you will probably want to make four or five “slices.”

    Perform the Trick

    • 5

Announce to the group that you are tired of wasting time, and, in the interest of promoting efficiency, you have invested in a Guatemalan company that has engineered a presliced banana.

    • 6

Hold up the banana and offer members of the group the opportunity to taste your presliced banana. Point out that it will not be necessary for the banana to be sliced so that all can share.

    • 7

Select someone to peel the banana. Sit back and enjoy the looks of astonishment and admiration.

Tips & Warnings

  • Avoid having to repeat the trick. Explain that only one banana was shipped to you from Guatemala.
