How to Give a Piggyback

Piggyback rides--carrying someone on your back--are something most children look forward to. However, there is a right way to give one, so you don't hurt yourself. Not only do children enjoy piggyback rides, anyone small enough to be carried will usually jump at the chance for a ride.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Kneel down. You should be at a level for the child to climb on your back. They have to be able to reach around your neck or shoulders to ride piggyback.

  2. Step 2

Have the person put their arms around your neck. Make sure their hold is secure, but be careful they don't strangle you. Adjust their hold, so you can breathe.

  3. Step 3

Put your hands behind your back and pick up one of the child's legs, and then grab hold of the other and hold them securely. Alternatively, have the child put her legs around your waist. Hold her legs with your arms and your hands should be in front of you. Be sure you have the weight of the person evenly divided.

  4. Step 4

Stand up carefully. Do this with great care, since this is where you can injure yourself. You may want to have someone spot you while you're standing up to be sure you don't lose your balance or injure yourself.

  5. Step 5

Run around like a fool and your child will be delighted. Be sure you keep your back straight, so you don't pull any muscles. Reverse the process in order for the child to dismount and end the piggyback ride.

Tips & Warnings
  • If the person is big enough, you can brace yourself and let the person jump up onto your back.
