How to Get Sashiko Patterns
The patterns that make up Sashiko quilting are centuries old. Many of the most common patterns today originated from China and Japan in the 1800s and earlier. The striking blocks of fabric covered in traditional Japanese and Chinese designs are becoming popular in the craft industry. To get Sashiko patterns is not difficult at all.

1
Look for designs that are suitable for the running-stitch technique. The running-stitch uses straight lines and few turns or curves.
-
2
Select Sashiko patterns containing vertical stripes, horizontal stripes, checks or diamonds. These designs are striking when applied on dark colors with contrasting thread and are perfect for use with the running-stitch technique.

3
Find drawings of nature and cultural items for Sashiko. Clouds, bamboo, fish scales and the tortoise shell are all important symbols in Eastern culture. Simple outlines of many objects are part of the Sashiko style.
-
4
Consider using outlines of other complicated needlepoint patterns. Simplifying a detailed rose or waterfall needlepoint pattern to straight lines and gentle curves creates a Sashiko-styled pattern.
-
5
Use simple patterns from other cultures. Simplified versions of Celtic designs, like a Celtic knot, sailor's knot or Brigit's cross are suitable for this type of hand-sewing technique and they make beautiful Sashiko patterns.

Tips & Warnings
Sashiko designs are sewn to fabric using a long needle for the running-stitch technique. Complex curves will shorten your stitches and lengthen the time in completing your project.
Purchase or create simple designs to start. Once you get the hang of the running-stitch, you can create more complex pieces where a simple design appears overlaid with a more complicated needlepoint design.
