Pet medications are costly, especially when purchased through your local vet. Yet, medications for your pet are not something you should go without. These medications provide health and well being to your pet. Luckily, there are several ways to get low cost pet medications that are the same quality, quantity and brand that the vet has prescribed.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Determine what type of pet medication your pet needs by having a professional vet handle the diagnosis of your pet's illness. You should never make a decision about how much medication or the type of medication your pet needs. After the initial visit with your vet, get a prescription for the medication from the vet and inform him you will be purchasing the medication elsewhere.

  2. Step 2

Find pet medication online, through various discount medication providers, such as 1-800-PetMeds or PetRX.com. These are well known providers of pet medications that are high in quality and reliability. Many offer the same brands that your vet does, but for much less.

  3. Step 3

Determine the right type of medication from these organizations or others that are similar. Try to stick with the same brand of medication your vet has prescribed. Also, be sure to consider medications that are off brand products, only if they have the same inactive and active ingredients. Make sure the medication comes in the right amount as prescribed by your vet.

  4. Step 4

Get free pet medications from the animal shelters, emergency medical facilities for pets or from your vet when you don't have the money. Programs are available to help those who can't pay for a pet's medical needs, including medications. Ask your vet about these programs.

  5. Step 5

Follow up with your vet once you have purchased and given the medication to the pet. This will help make sure the pet's medication is working correctly and your pet is getting better.
