How to Practice Bhakti Yoga

The purpose of bhakti yoga is to commune with the higher power in your life. This involves letting go of the ego of self and is a spiritual effort that does not require the physical movement typically associated with yoga. Practicing this form of yoga gives you a life of emotional fulfillment. Visualization and meditation are at the basis of your bhakti yoga practice.

Instructions

    • 1

Be grateful to God for what you have in your life and show your appreciation by sharing the blessings you're given and thanking God regularly for them. Offer your food to God mentally before eating it to purify it. Take note of nature around you and thank God for that as well.

    • 2

Know God by reading or listening to stories about God and sing along with songs. Communicate with God through prayer and conversations. Practice meditation on a daily basis by sitting in a quiet environment and remembering God and God's features.

    • 3

Worship God by either attending a church or other house of worship. Decorate an icon of God with flowers, bells or food as an offering. Talk with those experienced in bhakti yoga and gain insight from their knowledge.

    • 4

Give service to God by helping others, by giving your time and material objects. Portray a calm presence to others and use attention to your breath to help feel more calm. Slow down your breath when you begin to feel overwhelmed.

    • 5

Surrender yourself to God and God's will. Allow God to guide you and do not become overly emotional in response to things in your life. Trust that God has your best interests at heart.
