Step 1
Measure the space in which the desk will be placed. You need to know the length, width and depth dimensions to determine the maximum size the desk can be. Note other factors of the room that may limit where the desk can be placed, such as location of air registers in the floor, window location and other obstacles.
-
Step 2
Decide what features the desk should have. If it is going to be used for a computer, you will probably want a desk with a drawer that pulls out for the computer's keyboard. The student may also need shelving or drawers.
-
Step 3
Determine your budget. Your desk can range from a used product to a do-it-yourself kit or a piece of furniture modified for use as a desk. Which type of product you buy depends on how much you are willing to spend.
-
Step 4
Look for used furniture. If you are not particular about what the desk is made of, its condition or its features, this is your cheapest alternative. You are likely to need a vehicle large enough to transport it home yourself.
-
Step 5
Buy furniture that comes in assemble-yourself kits. You are more likely to get features you want versus settling for something used. The desk would also be free of scratches and scars. However, assembly is not always easy and does take some time.
-
Step 6
Try regular furniture stores or office supply stores for the ultimate student desk. These stores offer many options for wood, glass or plastic furniture. You may also choose a modular desk if your available space allows for it. Desks from furniture or office supply stores cost the most but they usually provide good value for the money spent.
