Furnishing a dollhouse requires time, money and great attention to detail for even the most advanced dollhouse collector. Many dollhouse collectors find enjoyment and cost savings by purchasing unfinished doll furniture and finishing it themselves to match the décor of their current dollhouse project.

From Quick Guide: Dollhouse Fun
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Examine unfinished doll furniture for the desired level of detail it includes. Although it is unfinished, the furniture should have realistic fixtures like knobs on a dresser or reflective glass on a mirror. Wholesalers such as Dollhouse Collectables (see Resources) offer tips on how to prepare, stain, seal and finish the furniture.

  2. Step 2

Search for naked, unfinished furniture meant for children. This type of furniture is less expensive and durable because it is meant for play and not just display. Dijon, Ltd. (see Resources) is an example of naked children's furniture.

  3. Step 3

Concentrate on locating pieces that are typically unfinished. Dining room tables and chairs, beds, kitchen cabinets, dressers, armoires and outside benches are all pieces of doll furniture that are easier to find naked.

  4. Step 4

Search for unfinished versions of quality doll furniture brands such as Bespaq and JBM furniture (see Resources). Bespaq furniture comes in different rich-looking woods, walnut and mahogany. JBM furniture are often reproductions or designs based on classic European and Early American styles.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make your own unfinished wood doll furniture out of recycled or common household materials such as a chest of drawers out of matchboxes and wooden floors from Popsicle sticks or wooden coffee stirrers.
