Antique tapestries are an extraordinary addition to any home, place of business or other location. These tapestries are often large, covering an entire wall. Frame them or hang them, but take care to preserve them properly. Antiques are difficult to buy since you need to do a bit of homework before making an investment. Still, they contribute character, beauty and charm to any space.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Know antique tapestries, including symbols, designs and characteristics of old tapestries, very well before buying. Some feature family crests while others depict ancient scenes. Those from China will have a variety of symbols on them with intricate details.

  2. Step 2

Look for companies that specialize in antique tapestries, Oriental rugs and embroideries such as Heirloom European Tapestries. Not only is this a great way to find tapestries you like and want to purchase, you can also compare them to others you are looking at.

  3. Step 3

Buy tapestries needing repair. Repair old, worn tapestries through a seamstress, but factor in the cost of doing so. Important areas to look for damage on tapestries include fraying, seams, the top (which often shows signs of aging) and the threading itself.

  4. Step 4

Consider the composition of the antique tapestries before purchasing them. Natural fibers are common, including wool blends, and these are known for their ability to keep color longer. Antique tapestries are almost always made with natural fibers and provide handmade qualities, making no two alike.

  5. Step 5

Invest in an appraisal for any antique tapestries you find and wish to consider buying. This will give you an opportunity to find the true value of the tapestry. Try to find appraisers locally or online that specialize in tapestries, but any antique dealer that is well versed will be able to appraise these.

  6. Step 6

Purchase well-known antique tapestries from art galleries and museums for a guaranteed value and history. Most antique tapestries located in these establishments offer a history or detail about their origin, which is not possible with most found tapestries. These are the highest investment possible, but give you one of the best examples of true antique tapestries.
