How to Buy Drinkware for a Tavern

A tavern owner has many little things to take care of. This includes buying drinkware to serve beer, wine, mixed drinks, shots and drinks on the rocks. Without the proper pitchers, glasses and mugs, your business can't function. You will need to decide whether glass, reusable plastic or disposable plastic makes the most sense.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Select reusable plastic or glass pitchers for draft beer. Provide either disposable plastic cups or glass pilsners and mugs for patrons to pour into from their pitcher. You will also need glasses for single draws of beer, and possibly pint glasses for larger draws or to pour bottled beers like Guinness.

  2. Step 2

Serve wine in an actual wineglass to add a touch of class to the beverage. These glasses come in sizes ranging from 6½ to 16½ oz.--you may want to stock more than one size.

  3. Step 3

Buy glassware or disposable plastic for mixed drinks. Glass tends to be fancier and allows footed drinkware. Good sizes include 8-oz. cocktail glasses, 9-oz. brandy glasses for mid-size mixed drinks such as margaritas on the rocks, 6-oz. martini glasses and 15-oz. hurricane glasses for larger drinks like daiquiris or Long Island iced tea.

  4. Step 4

Get drinkware to hold shots and straight liquor served on the rocks. Most establishments use glass or disposable plastic that hold 1 oz., 1.5 oz. or 2 oz. For straight liquor served on ice or double shots, opt for 4-oz. rocks or highball glasses.

  5. Step 5

Stock specialty glasses if you have the room and desire to appear more upscale. You can purchase fancy margarita and daiquiri glasses for frozen drinks, collins glasses to use in place of the standard cocktail glasses, brandy snifters for high-end brandy and a variety of fluted glasses for champagne.

Tips & Warnings
  • Disposable plastic glasses are safer in a rowdy environment and don't require cleaning, but replenishing your supply is a constant expense.
  • Some glasses are bound to get broken, so have a regular supplier to replace your drinkware on a recurring basis.
  • Many beer suppliers also have disposable plastic cups they'll sell to you at a discount to advertise their product. These cups are especially handy when you run beer specials, such as a ladies night, that includes free draws.
