Learn the appropriate stance is everything in sabre fencing. Without proper technique, you open up your body to attack, and you'll be out of position when you strike. Practice these steps to improve your stance before sparring with a partner.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Stand with your heels together and your toes facing apart at a 90-degree angle. Hold your sabre in your dominant hand and point the foot on that same side toward your opponent. This will be your lead foot.

  2. Step 2

Step forward with your lead foot until your feet are shoulder-width apart. Your back foot points sideways, while your lead foot points straight at your opponent. Bend your knees slightly and keep them loose, so you can react quickly and move into a step quickly.

  3. Step 3

Raise and lower your body with your knees. Keep your back straight to steady your balance. Bend your body forward and backward without moving your feet.

  4. Step 4

Raise your sabre hand until the tip points in the air slightly toward the opponent. Employ this basic stance to move into several different attacks and defenses. Bend your elbow slightly to give your arm full range of motion.
