How to Tune an RC Car Engine

The key to maximum RC engine performance is a balance between fuel and air running. Both act as cooling agents so that the engine doesn't burn. 75 percent of cooling comes from oil mixed in the fuel. Air leaks or damaged parts also affect engine performance.

Instructions

    • 1

Start the engine and let it run for approximately 30 seconds. Switch between revving the engine and letting it sit idle during this time.

    • 2

Check the engine. If it's running too lean, it overheats, dies while idling or accelerates. And engine that emits unused fuel, sounds like a diesel motor or doesn't reach top speed may be signaling that the air fuel mix is too rich.

    • 3

Turn the main or high speed needle counter clockwise if engine is running too lean. Adjust the main needle clockwise if the engine is running too rich.

    • 4

Fine tune the air fuel mixture. Turn the barrel or low speed needle located at the end of the carburetor for idle and off idle.

    • 5

Strike a balance between low idle which increases the likelihood of stalling and high idling with causes the engine to race.

Tips & Warnings

  • There are tests you can perform on the RC engine or fuel tank to check for a leak (see Resources below).
