Writing your congressman is an important right you have as a citizen of the United States. If you have an issue or petition you would like to bring up to him, sending a letter is a great way to do that. It is important to recognize that your congressman gets tons of mail each day and may not get to each letter for days if not weeks.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Find the name and address of your congressman. It may be easier for you to write your congressman an email than mailing a letter. You may do this by clicking on the link in the Resources section. You simply select the area in which you live from the pull-down menu and enter your zip code. You can instantly write your email letter to your congressman.

  2. Step 2

Determine the main point of your letter. Get to the point in your letter fast and explain yourself clearly.

  3. Step 3

Write about only one issue in your letter. Letters that cover multiple issues are not as likely to garner the attention from your representative as letters that are straight, to the point and express an opinion about a single issue.

  4. Step 4

Include detailed information about your situation, if you are writing a letter about a specific incident or problem you are having. Your congressman likely photocopies these types of letters and forwards them to the proper agency that can handle your complaint.

  5. Step 5

Include your real home address. Your congressman needs to know if you live in his district.

  6. Step 6

Be pleasant. Don't be being disrespectful or terse. Show the congressman the consideration and value that you wnat him to show you when he writes you back. It will only help your letter move to the top of the stack by being civil yet direct.

  7. Step 7

Use plain white paper and no staples or paper clips. Whatever you send will most likely go through a copier, and colored paper doesn't copy well. Staples will just get jumbled.

  8. Step 8

Be patient for a response, and don't get discouraged if the response isn't what you hoped. Just keep writing other representatives if your cause is that important to you.
