When a person suffers bone loss, osteoporosis develops, a painful condition with chronic bouts of discomfort. It's important to help your bones grow during your early years in order to avoid this disorder. You can take several steps to stimulate bone growth.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Take bone growth supplements. Many people use supplements from health food stores and vitamin shops to help build bigger and stronger bones. Pick up a calcium and vitamin D supplement to stimulate bone growth.

  2. Step 2

Eat foods that help your bones grow. Diet drastically affects your bone growth rate. You'll want to eat foods high in calcium, like dairy products, green vegetables and certain types of fish, such as salmon. Vitamin D rich foods like liver and eggs can also help.

  3. Step 3

Spend some time in the sun. Our best source of vitamin D is sunlight exposure. Spend at least 15 minutes outside each day to help build up bone mass.

  4. Step 4

Use hormone therapies to stimulate bone growth. Doctors can prescribe certain hormones in men and women to help a person's bones grow. Men may receive testosterone hormone therapy while women take estrogen.

  5. Step 5

Incorporate bone building exercises into your workout routines. Certain exercises help stimulate bone growth more than others. Weight bearing exercises are particularly effective.

Tips & Warnings
  • The amount of calcium you should consume per day varies by age and sex. On average, you need between 1200 and 1500 mg of calcium daily.
  • Don't drink or smoke when attempting to stimulate bone growth. These activities have a counter effect.
