How to Make a Classic Chignon

A classic chignon is an effective, but surprisingly simple, way of styling long hair. The result is a timeless updo that is appropriate for casual occasions or simply turning a bad hair day into a good one. You can easily dress up a classic chignon into an elegant do for special events such as a prom or wedding.

Things You'll Need:

• Hair brush
• Covered hair band
• Comb
• Large bobby pin or hair clip
• Hairspray

1. Brush the hair straight back and gather it into a ponytail at the nape of the neck. Secure the ponytail with a covered hair band.

2. Divide the ponytail into two equal halves and tease each one lightly with a comb.

3. Hold one of the sections in your hand and smooth it over your hand with the hairbrush.

4. Twist the section under and secure it with a large bobby pin or clip, arranging it so it hides the covered hair band.

5. Repeat with the remaining section.

6. Smooth down any stray hairs carefully with the hair brush and mist the chignon lightly with hair spray.

Tips & Warnings

• Once you master the classic chignon with the hair pulled straight back, try it with your bangs swept to one side. Simply part the hair on the side and at the crown. Pull the hair behind the crown straight back, bring the bangs to the side, and proceed as directed above.
• Add a jeweled hairstick or fresh flowers to the chignon for a special occasion.
• It's easier to form a chignon if you don't wash your hair the same day, as just washed hair is slick and difficult to manage. Creating a chignon will be easier if you wash your hair the day before.
