How to Make Cross-Stitch Socks
Cross stitch socks make a quick, adorable, easy to stitch gift for children and adults of all ages. You don't have to hunt for a specific sock pattern--just take your favorite cross-stitch pattern details and stitch them in place on clean, dry socks, then give them or wear them.

1
Pick your pattern. Keep in mind that because socks tend to be stretchy, it might be best to use smaller patterns that still leave plenty of stretch in the sock material. Make sure you have the right needle and embroidery floss, too.
-
2
Choose where on the sock to put your cross-stitch pattern. Keep in mind that the toes, heel and bottom of the feet get the most wear and so will destroy patterns the fastest. For most people and socks, the ankle cuff or top of the foot are the most likely places a cross-stitch pattern will last on.

3
Pre-stretch the sock material and hold it in place with a small embroidery hoop or scroll bars. If the sock is especially tiny you may have to just use your fingers. This helps keep the stitches from breaking if the sock is stretched later.
-
4
Pin waste canvas in place if you're going to use it. This is just for guiding cross stitches onto regular fabric; then it is cut away and pulled out according to the directions on the package.
-
5
Stitch your pattern, making sure to weave loose threads beneath existing stitches to avoid chafing knots. Try not to carry stitches outside each pattern detail on the sock, again to retain the stretchiness.
-
6
Remove waste canvas--if used--once you're done stitching, then wash the socks by hand according to package or pattern instructions. Check to make sure they survived the washing unscathed before giving them as gifts.

Tips & Warnings
You can avoid the need for waste canvas by purchasing socks made of cross-stitch material in some craft stores, but these might not be the most comfortable or attractive to wear.
Most embroidery floss is made of cotton, so avoid washing your stitched socks in hot water--this might shrink the stitches.
