How to Choose Closet Doors

When you're remodeling your home, don't forget about the closet doors. There are closets in each bedroom, of course, but also storage closets where you must choose appropriate doors. You may even have a pantry door to replace, as well. Add all of these to your shopping list.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Measure the height and width of the openings where you need closet doors. Some may need a set of double doors.

  2. Step 2

Think about the purpose of the doors. Bedroom closet doors are mainly for concealing clothes, but you may choose to get mirrored doors so they can double as full-length mirrors. You might want to use more ornate doors around the house, like for the coat closet in your foyer, since that's the first thing guests see when they come into your home.

  3. Step 3

Consider the style of your home. If you're remodeling your house, it may be a bit harder to do this, but think of the look you're going for. There are many types of closet doors to choose from; there are flat doors, paneled doors, louvered doors and decorative doors. You can paint most of these doors with ease, so don't factor your entire decision upon color.

  4. Step 4

See what type of door works best for the location you're putting it in. There are standard hinged doors, bi-fold doors, pocket doors and sliding doors. If you're short on space, pocket doors and sliding doors work well.

  5. Step 5

Head down to your local home improvement store to check out the selection. Find a few closet doors that fit the bill. Compare sizes and prices and then choose the ones that best suit your needs.
