How to Host a Masquerade Ball

Masquerade balls used to be extremely popular in the times of Shakespeare. Nowadays, these costume parties are less prevalent, but still fun. The distinguishing feature of one of these balls is that the guests wear masks to disguise their identity. Consider hosting a masquerade ball for the next party you throw.

Instructions

1. Decide on a theme for your masquerade ball. You can have a traditional Victorian theme, complete with elaborate dresses and a string quartet. Or you can put a modern twist on it with an '80s theme or "ghetto fabulous" theme.

2. Set a date and time to invite your guests. You can send formal invitations (better for a traditional masquerade ball) or send out email invitations. Request that your friends RSVP by a week before the ball, so you can get enough food and drinks for your guests. You can ask them to bring their own masks or you can provide them.

3. Find decorations that fit the theme you've chosen. You can use feathers, beads, tulle and flowers to add to the ambiance of your masquerade ball. You can also play music to enhance the atmosphere.

4. Choose appetizers and drinks to serve at your party. These should also go along with the theme of the ball. For example, if you have a Mardi Gras theme, you can have Cajun food, like jalapeño poppers and "jungle juice," or if you have a traditional theme, you can serve canapés and champagne. Make sure you get enough to serve everyone who has RSVPed, plus some for unexpected guests and their dates.

5. Figure out if you'd like to have structured activities at the masquerade ball or if you'd rather just let the party flow and let people choose what they want to do. You can have costume contests or play guessing games to determine who's who. Offer prizes for the winners.
