How to Service Car Engine Pistons

A defect in your pistons can cause your engine to lose compression, which translates into less power and less fuel efficiency. Service your own pistons as a weekend project, and make sure your engine is running at its peak.

Instructions

1. Clean and degrease the engine, and start disassembling according to the instructions provided in your repair manual. Only take off as many parts as necessary. You're likely able to remove the engine head and leave the block in place.

2. Remove the pistons. Clean any carbon deposits by soaking them in kerosene, and inspect for any cracks or uneven wear.

3. Leave the piston rings in place and inspect their condition. Look to make sure they're in good condition, have a uniform top and bottom gap around their entire circumference, and that they have the clearance specified in your auto repair manual. If any of these factors are off, replace the piston rings.

4. Use a pair of calipers to measure the size of the piston. Excessive wear may cause the piston to be smaller than ideal specifications. If this happens, you'll be losing compression, and should replace the piston.

5. Lubricate the pistons in clean oil, and reinstall them.
