How to Treat Menstrual Cramps With Hydrotherapy

Hydrotherapy is a type of therapy with water. It uses steam, water, ice and cold and hot water to relieve the symptoms of ear infections, fractures, muscles strains, fevers, depression and menstrual cramps. Hydrotherapy is cheap and easy to do in your home. There are some things to keep in mind if you're going to use hydrotherapy to treat menstrual cramps.

  • Water
  • Wash cloths
  • Essential oils (optional)
  1. Step 1

    Apply warm (not hot) compresses to your belly area to relieve menstrual cramps. You can add a few drops of essential oils such as marjoram, ginger and lavender to the compress for some aromatherapy help in relieving your menstrual cramps. Some people will alternate warm and cool compresses to treat menstrual cramps.

  2. Step 2

    Hop in the shower. The shower is a great way to relieve back menstrual cramps (cramps felt in the back rather than the front). The heat soothes and the water pressure relieves tension. Some women also find showers helpful for regular cramps.

  3. Step 3

    Take a warm bath. A warm bath relaxes muscles and may help ease menstrual cramps. Some people will add a few drops of lavender or marjoram essential oils to the bath water. These essential oils are also helpful in relieving menstrual cramps. Women should avoid taking hot baths and using bubble bath as it can imbalance vaginal flora.
