How to Delete a Template in Outlook

If you have created templates for email messages in Microsoft Outlook 2007, you can delete these templates if you no longer need them. Deleting templates will organize your remaining templates and save you hard drive space. This process involves using Windows Explorer to delete the Outlook 2007 template files.

Things You'll Need:

  • Microsoft Outlook 2007
  • Windows Explorer
  1. Step 1

    Choose the "Start" button at the bottom left corner of your computer screen to display the Start menu. Point to "All Programs," select "Accessories" and click on "Windows Explorer." The Windows Explorer window will open onto your desktop.

  2. Step 2

    Use the "Look in" drop-down list and file tree to locate the Outlook template that you want to delete. By default, the templates are saved here: C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates. But, this may be different if you have saved your templates in another location.

  3. Step 3

    Click to select the Outlook 2007 template that you want to delete. The file will become highlighted once it is selected.

  4. Step 4

    Press the "Delete" key on your keyboard to delete the selected template. A confirmation dialog box will appear asking you to confirm that you want to delete the selected template.

  5. Step 5

    Select the "Yes" button to confirm that you want to delete the selected template. The confirmation dialog box will disappear and the template you have selected will be deleted from your computer.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can retrieve a deleted Microsoft Outlook 2007 template file from the Recycle Bin if you change your mind and want to restore the template file.
