Swimming pool timers are connected to the water supply to control the flow of water through the filters during the day. A timer is used to automatically regulate the cleaning schedule. Swimming pool timers can also control chlorination, air conditioning, heat pumps and music.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Select a swimming pool timer that is easy to install. Since timers are usually installed after the pool filtration system is hooked up, buy a timer that will easily integrate into the filtration system.

  2. Step 2

Buy a swimming pool timer that has multiple functions. Swimming pool timers are designed to not only turn the pumps on and off but to also control the lights, climate control devices and more. Buy a timer that can hook together all your poolside electrical appliances.

  3. Step 3

Purchase dual swimming pool timers to handle larger pools. The filtration systems in larger pools are complex and should have their own timer to exclusively regulate the filtering functions. The second timer can be used to control lighting and all other functions.

  4. Step 4

Insist on a non-corrosive cover for your swimming pool timer. As the timer will be exposed to the elements and an abundance of water, non-corrosive materials are a must.

  5. Step 5

Check the electrical requirements of the swimming pool timer. If you have just 110 volt electrical hookups you would need to install a new line for a 220 volt swimming pool timer.
