Step 1
Make sure your wall tent is ready for the tent stove. Most wall tent stoves hook up to the stove jack and flap built into the upper portion of the tent. The jack and flap should be in good shape and free of any moisture or debris.
-
Step 2
Set up your wall tent stove according to the manufacturer's directions. A tent stove is about 2 feet in length, but needs another 2 feet of open space around each side for safety as it gives off plenty of heat. This means that the stove is going to stick out 4 feet and take up 6 feet of the tent wall. Be sure to place the stove appropriately under the stove jack.
-
Step 3
Fit the stovepipe through the stove jack. The stovepipe needs to clear the tent ridge by 6 inches to keep sparks from hitting the tent roof. Even if the wall tent is heat treated, sparks and excess heat can still cause major problems and even fires if the stove is not set up properly.
-
Step 4
Add sand to the bottom of lightweight wall tent stoves to make the stove last longer and keep the wood from burning out the bottom of the stove, because the steel used to make these stoves is thinner and more easily damaged. For cold climates, heavy use, or large groups consider investing in a sturdier wall tent stove instead.
-
Step 5
Attach a spark arrester to the stovepipe to keep sparks from shooting out of the stove pipe and burning the tent. This is a good safety measure, but needs to be checked daily for any creosote buildup. If you see buildup, just remove the arrester and tap it to knock the creosote buildup off of the arrester. You may also want to invest in a damper to help boost the stove's heating efficiency.
