How to Trace Asian Roots
Genealogy has become a passion for millions of people who want to know their family, their ancestry, the cities their ancestors came from and the adventures that happened along the way. There are lots of resources available online to help you trace your Asian roots, but you also need to collect information from older generations while your relatives are still around.

1
Write down names and information about any of your ancestors that you know. Start with your parents and their siblings, then trace your Asian roots back through the generations.
-
2
Ask your parents and grandparents what they know about their siblings, their parents, their grandparents and so on. If your family is still in touch with relatives in Asia, contact them as well.
-
-
3
Trace your roots through family documents: written histories or memoirs, birth certificates, marriage certificates, photographs and any travel and immigration documents your ancestors used.
-
4
Draw up a list of what you don't know: birthplaces, birthdates, names, marriage dates and so on. Decide which individuals or information you want to search for first, remembering that recent generations will be easier to learn about.
-
5
Go online. The Web has multiple genealogy sites, including many devoted to tracing Asian roots. See Resources below.
-
6
Buy research materials. If you're seriously committed to your project, a book such as "In Search of Your Asian Roots," which includes detailed accounts of Chinese surnames, would be a good addition to your library.
