Winter is a great time of year to cozy up with a warm blanket. Indeed, there is nothing better than sitting on the couch and watching TV, or reading a book with a loved one under a wool blanket. You can easily sew several wool blankets to keep around your house for decoration and for comfort.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 2 yards of wool fabric
  • 6 skeins of embroidery floss
  • Needle
  • Scissors
  1. Step 1

Buy 2 yards of 60-inch-wide heavy wool fabric. Look for solid colors that match your decor, or big red and black checks for a rustic-cabin look.

  2. Step 2

Sew a blanket stitch all the way around the edges of the fabric with embroidery thread. Using six strands of embroidery floss, thread the needle and knot the thread. Starting 1/4-inch away from the edge of the fabric, pull the needle through to the front of the blanket from the back to secure the knot.

  3. Step 3

Insert the needle next to where you came up from the back of the blanket, bringing the point of the needle out toward the edge of the fabric.

  4. Step 4

Put the thread behind the point of the needle. Pull the needle all the way through so that the extra thread follows along the edge of the fabric. Do this all the way around the edge of the blanket.

  5. Step 5

Tie a knot with your thread on the back side of your fabric to end the blanket stitch edging and finish your wool blanket.

Tips & Warnings
  • The ends of a wool blanket will not unravel so a blanket stitch edging is perfect for wool blankets. This stitch is only decorative and will not prevent other fabrics from unraveling.
  • Make sure your stitches are the same size all the way around the edge of your blanket to give a perfect and uniform look.
  • Use a contrasting color of thread for your blanket stitch to add more color.
