How to Knit a 70s ski hat
A hat is an easy project to complete in only a few short hours. This hat is a simple design that is simple and easy to personalize. It can be made in solid colors or with strips. This is a great project for beginning knitters to make as soon as decreases and working in the round is mastered.

Knitting the Hat

Choose your DK weight yarn and 4mm double pointed needles. You will need around 230 to 300 yards or yarn for this project.

Knit a gauge swatch. You will need 18 stitches per 4 inches to have the correct gauge for this project. Change the needles size if you need to in order to get gauge.

Cast on 99 stitches. This size will fit most heads. If you want to make a child's version, cast on 77 inches. You can add or decrease stitches to make a larger or smaller size if necessary just keep the number in multiples of 11.

Distribute the stitches around four double pointed needles.

Join in the round. Make sure not to twist the stitches.

Knit 1 inch of k1, p1 ribbing.

Knit in stockinette stitch for 5 inches. The hat should measure 6 inches from the edge.
Decreasing the Hat

Begin decreasing by knitting 9 then knitting two stitches together. Repeat this for an entire row. Knit 4 rows in stockinette stitch.

Decrease again by knitting 8 and knitting two stitches together. Repeat this for an entire row. Knit 2 rows in stockinette stitch.

Decrease another row by knitting 7 stitches and then knitting two stitches together. Repeat this for an entire row. Knit 1 row in stockinette.

Continue to decrease the number of stitches before the decrease each time. Next knit 6 before knitting two together, then 5, then 4 stitches, 3 then 2 then 1.

Knit two stitches together and repeat all across the row. You'll begin with 16 stitches and end with 8 stitches. Cut a 6 inch tail.

Slide the tail of the yarn through the remaining stitches with a tapestry needles. Weave in all the ends of the yarn.
