How to Knit a Berlin Scarf

This luscious scarf is knit in the Brioche Stitch, which creates a sort of gently raised ribbed effect. The designer of this pattern created the scarf for her trip to Germany, hence the name. The scarf is worked in any worsted weight yarn or you can adjust the pattern if you prefer to use a sport weight fiber.

Things You'll Need

  • 400 yards worsted weight yarn
  • Knitting needles, U.S. size 8 (or size for correct gauge)
  • Tapestry needle

Instructions

    • 1

Cast on 30 stitches. Begin knitting Row 1 by knitting 2, then yarn over, slip one, knit one. Repeat the sequence at the yarn over stitch until the last two stitches, then knit one, slip one.

    • 2

Continue with Row 2: knit 2, yarn over, slip one, knit two together. Continue this sequence and repeat at the yarn over stitch. The last two stitches end with knit one and slip one. Note that the knitting of two together precedes the slipped stitch with the yarn over of the row before.

    • 3

Knit Row 3 as you did Row 2. Continue in the pattern until the scarf is 55 inches long or the desired length.

    • 4

Bind off the last row very loosely. Slip one stitch, knit one, then pass the slipped stitch over (psso). Purl one, knit two together, then bring the purled stitch over the decreased stitch.

    • 5

Repeat the sequence at the purl stitch until the last two stitches, then bind off in the normal fashion.

    • 6

Use a tapestry needle to weave the ends into the work. Block the piece lightly by hand.

Tips & Warnings

  • Gauge is 4 stitches equals one inch. Adjust the needle size for the correct gauge.

  • Launder the scarf per the yarn manufacturer's instructions.

  • Store the scarf folded in a drawer, as hanging it up will stretch it and distort the look of the knit.
