Get a driver's permit handbook and study guide from the Bureau of Motor Vehicles, a classroom instructor, or download the state's drivers' manual (See Resources).

Study for at least three weeks prior to the test. Spend 10 or 15 minutes twice a day, five days a week. Note that some of the information is common sense, while other topics are more challenging.

Review the study guide carefully and make notes. Highlight the areas that are confusing. Talk to an experienced driver about the correct answers and as him to explain.

Create an index card for each area of the study guide that is a unclear. Make special note of information regarding allowable times and distances for driving and stopping. Write out the questions with the correct answers and review them daily.

Ask someone to serve as a study partner to review the material. Ask the study partner to questions you on the material. Create scenarios to reinforce the information.

Step 6
Check online for state-specific information about the driver's permit exam, study materials and sample tests. Incorporate the material into the study plan.

Step 7
Set aside a morning or afternoon to take the test without other pressing obligations. Arrange for reliable transportation. Review the material one time a few hours before leaving for the test site. Relax.
