How to Change a Pool Filter

The pool filter is a necessity for anyone wanting to keep a pool crystal clear and safe to swim in. This device constantly feeds the pool water through a fine filter that removes any debris from the water and returns the water cleanly to the pool. If you notice discoloration or debris floating in your pool or notice holes in your filter, it may be time to replace the device.

1. Cut the electricity to your pool and water pump system. You will be opening up your pump which deals with electricity and water. If electricity is not properly turned off, changing your filter could result in serious injury.

2. Open the pressure release valve. The release valve, like the name implies, helps maintain the pump's pressure. The valve will appear to be a large, plastic circle. Unscrew this until a hissing begins. Wait until the hissing stops to move to the next step.

3. Remove the restraining band and lid from your pump. These should remove simply without any tools. Just peel the band off and store it in a safe location, then gently lift the lid. Certain models may have a latch system that must be opened first.

4. Locate your swimming pool filter once you have lifted the lid. This will appear as a long cylinder with several ridges running around the outside. Simply lift the filter up by the top and remove it. There will most likely be some water in the filter and will therefore be heavier than the new filter.

5. Drop a new filter into the slot and replace the lid and restraining band. Screw the pressure valve back in tightly. Failure to do this will result in low pressure and poor pump performance. Finally, turn on the power and enjoy your pool.
