How to Find a Male Tutu

Traditionally, a tutu is a ballerina's short skirt made of layers of fabric. A male tutu can be used as part of a humorous costume for men. A male tutu has to be designed in a larger size to fit the male physique. Male tutus don't need to be made with the same exacting perfection of the tutus worn by ballerinas.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Search the local costume shops especially at Halloween time for a male tutu. Some of the cheapest knockoffs of large size tutus for men are often made with scratchy, stiff plastic materials and are not designed to be worn for multiple holidays.

  2. Step 2

Visit the local theater group and ask their tailor for the largest size tutu they have. Local theater groups are often hard-pressed financially and can be convinced to sell their old costumes for a reasonable price. The man in a tutu is a standard joke and many theater companies have several large size tutus in their wardrobes for humorous skits.

  3. Step 3

Join a ballet company as a volunteer stage hand. Many regional ballet companies welcome local assistance. Borrow a tutu would have--but use it carefully and keep it clean. Traditionally performing companies won't mind an occasional borrowing of costumes if the wearer is a trusted member of the performing troupe.

  4. Step 4

Have a custom male tutu made especially for you. Most ballerinas and dancers have their clothing made by tailors to fit perfectly. Look for tailors who specialize in tutus, such as those as Tutu.com (see Resources).

  5. Step 5

Get a male tutu online. There are many costumes shops online who can ship a male tutu to you within 3 to 5 days of ordering, such as Anytime Costumes (see Resources). Don't just order the largest tutu; measure your waist to custom fit the tutu for comfort.
