There are many varieties of Oncidium orchids. They thrive in nature in a diverse range of habitats. These orchids produce sprays of flowers and slender leaves. The yellow varieties are particularly popular. You can produce lovely Oncidium orchids by providing your orchids with the proper care.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Pot your Oncidium orchid in a pot that drains well. Use a fine-grade potting mix for plants with fine roots, and a coarser mixture for plants with larger roots.

  2. Step 2

Care for your orchid by allowing it to get plenty of light, but not so much that it causes the plant to shrivel. In general, if your Oncidium has thick leaves, it likes more light.

  3. Step 3

Keep the temperature moderate as part of your orchid care plan. You want a room temperature that's roughly between a minimum of 55 degrees and a maximum of 80 degrees.

  4. Step 4

Water your orchid actively during the growing season, letting the soil dry out about halfway between each watering. As part of your orchid care, reduce the watering when the plant isn't actively growing.

  5. Step 5

Feed your orchid regularly during the growing season. Care for your orchid by fertilizing it twice a month.

Tips & Warnings
  • If your orchid's leaves are yellow, then it has too much light. If the leaves are dark green, it has too little light. You want to aim for leaves that are a light green color.
  • Some varieties of Oncidium orchids like to rest during the winter, so you may need to drastically reduce your watering schedule. Check with the place you purchased the plant to find out if this is the case. If your plant does need rest, be sure to still water it enough that the bulbs don't dry up and shrivel.
