Step 1
Start the seeds in a pot indoors, or in some rich potting soil outdoors. If you prefer to grow hoyas from a starter plant, remove three leaf nodes from the bottom of the plant, then add rooting hormone powder. Find the starter plant and the rooting hormone powder at any gardening center. Plant the starter in a soil mix of peat moss and vermiculite.
-
Step 2
Water the hoyas at least once a week, or every other week. Saturate the soil around the hoya plant, allowing the water to drain from the pot. Wait until the soil dries out before adding more water.
-
Step 3
Place the hoyas in a brightly lit room or under a window that gets indirect sunlight. When growing the hoyas outside, make sure the area has a balance of sunlight and shade. The hoyas only require moderate amounts of sunlight and humidity to grow.
-
Step 4
Fertilize the hoyas once every month until the winter, when the blooms stop growing for the season. Use fertilizer that contains a mixture of nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium.
-
Step 5
Keep spider mites and mealy bugs away from the hoyas. Spray insecticidal soap on the plants to protect them from damage.
-
Step 6
Prune the hoya plants so that the blooms can grow evenly. Trim the plants whenever growth becomes excessive.
