Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Measure the window in which the curtains are being made for. Measure from the top edge of the window frame straight down to the bottom edge of the window frame. Measure from the left to right across the window frame from the outer edges.

  2. Step 2

Add 10 inches to the height measurement. The extra 10 inches will provide enough for a 5-inch hem at the bottom of the curtain for weight which will make the curtain hang correctly. An extra 5 inches at the top will provide enough fabric for the casing in which the curtain rod will go through.

  3. Step 3

Multiply the width measurement by 2. The extra fabric is for gathering and folds so that the curtain is not a flat sheet covering the window. Using twice the width of fabric will provide enough folds to so that the seams and the mismatched embroidery pattern will not be visible.

  4. Step 4

Stitch together as many panels of fabric as are needed for the width of the window. Most fabric comes in widths of either 45 inches or 60 inches. Unless the window is very small, panels will need to be sewn together to get enough fabric for two times the width.

  5. Step 5

Fold up 1 inch of the bottom of the fabric and press with an iron. Fold the fabric another 4 inches and press into place.

  6. Step 6

Secure the pressed hems with pins and stitch into place with a straight seam with a ½ or 5/8 inch seam allowance. Fold the top edge down 1 inch and press into place. Fold it down another 4 inches and press into place.

  7. Step 7

Pin along this fold and then stitch with a straight stitch in the same manner as the bottom. Use a fabric pencil and ruler to mark a straight line one inch above the seam. Stitch along the line as well. This creates the casing for the curtain rod to go through. Fold each edge on the sides over ¾ of an inch, press into place, and then fold another ¾ of an inch. Stitch the seam closed with a straight stitch.
