Step 1
Check to make sure that liquid dishwashing soap wasn't accidentally used instead of automatic dishwasher detergent. Liquid dishwashing soap was designed for hand washing dishes and will cause excessive foaming inside the your dishwasher.
-
Step 2
Don't panic if you've discovered that liquid dishwashing detergent was used. Reduce the amount of foam by spraying the foam with salt to bring it down. Then you'll need to put the dishwasher into the drain cycle to properly and fully remove the soap.
-
Step 3
Make sure you haven't used too much automatic dishwasher detergent. This problem is more of a concern for higher end and newer dishwashers with sensors designed to detect when the pump isn't working. Too much soap will clog the sensor and make the dishwasher think that it's empty so it cuts the water supply. Complete the same steps from Step 2 to fix the foam.
-
Step 4
Examine the drain hose to make sure it isn't kinked. A kinked drain hose could prevent the right amount of water from getting into your dishwasher and cause foaming.
-
Step 5
Check to make sure there's nothing blocking the hose. You can check to see if it's clogged by removing the hose, placing it over a sink and blowing through it. Kinks are easy to fix since they can be noticed at a glance and you can unkink them.
