1
Download ZoneAlarm Free Personal Firewall from the ZoneAlarm website. It can also be found at other sites like CNET. Don't download the program from a site that you don't know to be reputable. Check that you save it in a place that is easy for you to find.

2
Run the program by double-clicking on the icon or using the Run function. You'll probably want to close all the other programs you are running to make sure the installation goes smoothly. The program will ask you to make some choices. If you're an experienced computer user, you can try customizing your settings. If not, go with the recommended standard setting.

3
Slide the controls up and down to determine where you want each security setting. If you know that all of the sites you visit are legitimate, you may want to leave the security settings a little lower. ZoneAlarm's Free Personal Firewall comes with an Internet lock that stops anyone on the Internet from accessing your computer when you're not around, zones that let you know when someone is trying to run an application on your computer and an application control.

4
Navigate through the advanced settings to decide how frequently you want to be notified about threats and their severity. If you've ever been interrupted by your firewall while playing a game, you may have been annoyed at the loss of game progress. Game Mode allows you to decide whether or not ZoneAlarm breaks in while you're playing your favorite game.

5
Maintain your security level by examining the reports the program makes. If you're getting repeated intrusion attempts from a certain IP address, it might be a person trying to hack into your computer. If the program points out that some sites you frequent are a problem, you may want to rethink your browsing habits.
