If your boat is showing a little wear and tear, she might need a little spit and polish, and some epoxy to fill in a few of the scrapes you've gotten her in. Many repairs can be done on your own, and with a little bit of work, she'll be in ship-shape once again.

From Quick Guide: Boat Supplies for Beginners
Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Prepare a base for the fairing compound by first applying a mixture of epoxy and hardener in a 5 to 1 ratio with a paintbrush.

  2. Step 2

Cover the area completely with the mixture, making sure to saturate all areas with your paintbrush. This step will help strengthen the weakened area of the boat.

  3. Step 3

Allow the area to dry for an hour before applying the thickened mixture.

  4. Step 4

Make fairing compound by mixing resin and hardener in a 5-1 ratio so that it is very thick like peanut butter. Read the instructions on the hardener to find out how fast the compound will cure.

  5. Step 5

Use a plastic squeegee to apply the fairing compound to the repair area. Pile it up so that it's higher than the rest of the surfaces. Work within the time frame stated on the packaging.

  6. Step 6

Allow the compound to cure completely before sanding the repaired area.
