Instructions

  1. The Traditional Origami Square Base

    • 1

Start with a square piece of paper.

    • 2

Fold the paper in half. Press down on the crease to make the line really take. Fold it backwards so that the crease becomes flexible.

    • 3

Press down on the crease after you fold the paper diagonally. Flip it back on its fold so that the crease becomes flexible.

    • 4

Repeat your diagonal fold, but this time in the opposite direction. Press down on the crease. Flip it back on its fold so that the crease becomes flexible.

    The Tulip

    • 5

Start with a traditional origami square base.

    • 6

Fashion the square into a traditional origami "waterbomb" base. Treating the square as a map, take the east and west points and fold them down to the south point. It will produce a triangle.

    • 7

Fold the southeast and southwest corners of the top flap to the top point. Repeat this process with the bottom flap. It will construct a diamond.

    • 8

Turn the front flap of the diamond to its left, as if you were turning a page in a book, and press down. Flip the diamond over and duplicate the process.

    • 9

Curl the top flaps toward each other and insert one into the other. Once you've tucked one flap into the other as far as it goes, press the tuck flat. Replicate the process on the other side.

    • 10

Blow air into the base of the tulip. It will inflate into a flower shape.

    • 11

Peel back the top four flaps carefully. They create the petals blossoming from the origami tulip.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use different colors to make your flower look more like a real one. Yellow or red is great for the bud and of course green is perfect if you construct a stem.

  • Craft an origami flower stem to perfect your origami tulip.
