Usually the best place to leave tulip bulbs is in the ground, but if you live in a very cold climate, you may have to bring the bulbs inside for the winter. It's easy to store tulip bulbs if you follow a few simple guidelines.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Spread the tulip bulbs on a layer of newspapers to dry.

  2. Step 2

Spread a layer of vermiculite, dry sand or peat moss in the bottom of a flat tray or container without a lid.

  3. Step 3

Place the dry tulip bulbs in the container. Make sure they have air circulation and that they are only one layer thick.

  4. Step 4

Put the tray or container of bulbs in a dark, cool place that has low humidity and plenty of ventilation. Too much humidity will cause the bulbs to rot. A garage is a good place if the temperature remains cool but doesn't drop below freezing.

Tips & Warnings
  • A refrigerator is the ideal place to store tulips, but don't put tulips in a refrigerator with fruits and vegetables. The ethylene gas in fruits and vegetables can deform or kill the buds inside the tulip bulbs.
  • Tulip bulbs can be stored in a ventilated bag such as a bag constructed of old panty hose, onion bag or a paper sack with the top left open.
  • Damaged bulbs will often recover, but in order to protect healthy bulbs, store damaged bulbs separately.
  • Never store tulip bulbs in a location that is accessible to squirrels, mice, chipmunks or other rodents that can feast on the bulbs.
