How to Track Household Expenses With Budget Software

If you're living check to check or wonder where all of your disposable income goes each month, track your household expenses and splurges with software to keep you on budget. Use these tips to ensure the figures you input are accurate and that the data you receive helps you create realistic financial goals.

Instructions

    • 1

Buy or download a software program designed to track personal expenses and serve as a budget manager. The software should allow you to enter your income from multiple sources and expenses in specific categories such as mortgage or car payments, utilities, groceries, gifts and miscellaneous expenses. • 2

Designate a place such as a basket or letter holder for your family members to store their monthly paycheck stubs and receipts so you can enter them into the program at the end of each week or month. Get everyone into the habit of saving their receipts since something as "insignificant" as 5 dollars here and there for coffee can add up at the end of the month.

    • 3

Advise everyone to be honest when telling you how much they've spent. If your teenager tries to conceal how much she charged at the mall, for example, you won't be able to accurately gauge where your money is going no matter what budgeting software you choose.

    • 4

Study the charts generated by the software program to track where you've spent most of your money over the course of several months. Use the data to determine where you're typically splurging and what you can realistically cut back on to stay within budget or contribute extra to savings. Also reallocate your budget if the results reveal that you're spending more in certain areas (such as gas or groceries) due to rising costs.
